Kenyan farmers will gain access to a new line of microbial crop nutrition products through a distribution partnership between Bioline Agrosciences Africa and Biolevel.
The agreement marks Biolevel’s entry into the Kenyan market and expands Bioline’s biological offerings beyond crop protection into crop nutrition. Under the partnership, Bioline will distribute Biolevel’s microbial biofertilizer technologies across Kenya, with plans for future expansion into East and Southern Africa.
The companies said the collaboration follows several seasons of local field evaluations that demonstrated consistent performance under Kenyan growing conditions.
The launch comes as fertilizer remains one of the largest production costs for farmers across the region, often accounting for 30 to 50 per cent of total production expenses depending on the crop and farming system. While fertilizer subsidy programs have improved access, yield gains have not always kept pace with increased fertilizer use.
According to the companies, fertilizer applications have risen steadily in many maize-growing areas over the past decade, yet yields in numerous regions remain below two tonnes per hectare. In some cases, growers have increased fertilizer rates simply to maintain existing production levels.
Biolevel’s technology is designed to improve nutrient-use efficiency rather than supply nutrients directly. Applied at the seed stage, the microbial products help plants access nutrients already present in the soil or supplied through conventional fertilizers. The microorganisms support root development and promote natural processes such as nitrogen fixation and nutrient solubilization.
Field evaluations in Kenya showed the technology could reduce fertilizer requirements by 15 to 30 per cent while maintaining yields. In some trials, yields increased despite lower fertilizer application rates.
For Bioline, the addition of crop nutrition products complements its existing biological crop protection portfolio and supports a more integrated farm management approach.
“With the addition of Biolevel’s microbial biofertilizers, we can now offer a more comprehensive integrated farm management approach,” said Barnaba Rotich, head of commercial for Africa and the Middle East at Bioline Agrosciences.
