BioConsortia secures $15M to scale nitrogen-fixing seed treatment product

August 4, 2025

BioConsortia, Inc., a Davis, California-based agricultural biotechnology firm, has closed a $15 million funding round from existing investors led by Otter Capital and affiliated funds. The capital injection will accelerate the global commercialization of Always-N™, the company’s nitrogen-fixing seed treatment for corn.

The financing marks a significant milestone for BioConsortia, bringing total investment to $95 million since it was founded in 2014. The funds will support manufacturing scale-up, inventory building, and market expansion ahead of the upcoming growing season.

Always-N™ represents a potential paradigm shift in agricultural inputs, enabling farmers to maintain yields while reducing synthetic nitrogen fertilizer usage, says the company. The product combines advanced gene editing with extended shelf stability exceeding two years—a critical differentiator in the biologicals market.

“This investment reflects their deep confidence in BioConsortia’s science, strategy, and commercial momentum,” said Marcus Meadows-Smith, BioConsortia’s CEO, regarding the company’s long-standing investors.

Following a successful 2024 commercial debut in New Zealand (see link below), BioConsortia is preparing for broader market entry through strategic partnerships, including with The Mosaic Company for row crops in the Americas.

The technology addresses growing environmental concerns around synthetic nitrogen fertilizers, which see approximately half of applied nitrogen lost to runoff or converted to nitrous oxide, says BioConsortia.

BioConsortia’s proprietary platform integrates Advanced Microbial Selection™ with GenExpress™ and GenePro™ tools to enhance microbial traits. Beyond Always-N™, the company is advancing a pipeline of biostimulants, fungicides, nematicides, and insecticides engineered for extended shelf life and superior field performance.
