Biotalys has entered into a partnership with Danish precision fermentation pioneer 21st.BIO to accelerate the production of its protein-based biocontrol solutions.
The collaboration aims to leverage 21st.BIO’s fermentation platform to produce Biotalys’ AGROBODY biocontrol products at commercially competitive costs.
21st.BIO brings over four decades of expertise in precision fermentation, with production strains proven in broad commercial applications. The partnership will integrate 21st.BIO’s proprietary technology, including elements licensed from Novonesis, with Biotalys’ existing advancements. This synergy is expected to enhance process development and enable efficient, large-scale manufacturing of Biotalys’ biocontrol products, including its flagship biofungicide, EVOCA NG.
“This partnership marks an important strategic step in strengthening the technical backbone of our AGROBODY platform,” said Kevin Helash, CEO of Biotalys, in a news release. “By combining 21st.BIO’s proven fermentation expertise with our innovation in protein-based biocontrols, we are reinforcing the foundation needed to support a growing and differentiated product portfolio.”
Thomas Schmidt, co-founder and CEO of 21st.BIO, emphasized the importance of scaling innovation: “Our collaboration will ensure that powerful protein-based biocontrols like EVOCA NG become a sustainable and cost-effective option for growers around the globe, so we can support a safer, more secure food chain for all.”
As part of this transition, Biotalys and Novonesis will conclude their collaboration, with Biotalys now focusing on securing manufacturing and distribution partnerships globally. The company anticipates the launch of EVOCA NG in the U.S. by 2028-29 and in the E.U. by 2029-30, targeting a combined market of approximately USD 1.2 billion.
Biotalys also confirmed its cash runway into May 2026 and is exploring additional financing options to support the commercialization of EVOCA NG and the continued development of its AGROBODY biocontrol portfolio.
EVOCA NG, Biotalys’ first commercial biofungicide, is designed to combat fungal diseases such as Botrytis and powdery mildew. Following the recent EPA approval of EVOCA, Biotalys expects a streamlined regulatory process for EVOCA NG, as both products share the same active ingredient.
