Misr Speciality Fertilizer Commissions its plant in Egypt
The first liquid speciality factory in Egypt was commissioned in September by Misr Speciality Fertilizer (MSF) chairman and SQM director, Patrick van Beneden, who welcomed to the factory close to 300 guests representing the most prominent local authorities and local industries as well as leading growers and international expert contributors to MSF. The company MSF is a joint venture between SQM, Yara and Yara’s local partners Assem Doss and Gamal Aziz. The capacity of the plant and market target exceeds 85,000 tons of Yara branded liquid fertilizers. It was designed by Yara Technology expert teams and erected by Yara engineer Helge Pihl.
It is located along the so-called “desert road" between Alexandria and Cairo in the "tax free" zone called Noberia. Until 1996, this area was all desert, but Egypt started then investing huge amounts in developing a distribution system for the Nile water, financed by the UN and the World Bank. Today there are approx 350.000 ha of irrigated cash crops grown in the area. The factory is the first of its kind in Egypt and Yara and its alliance partner SQM are the first players to introduce a liquid plant nutrition system into this crop segment, all based on fertigation.
